It is claimed in a lawsuit that Meta has enabled discriminatory practices by wide variety of advertisers with regards to age, gender, and ethnicity.
Meta Lawsuit
A class-action case brought on behalf of Facebook users who believe they were discriminated against, because Meta allowed marketers and advertisers to run ads by targeting employment and housing audiences based on variables such as age, gender, and race has been permitted by the Quebec Court of Appeal.
Thousands of Quebecers who used Facebook since 2016 and have been actively searching for employment or accommodation during that time may be eligible to be compensated from the lawsuit ruling.
Meta has only about 60 days from the date of the Quebec Superior Court’s decision to make a final decision if they should appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Montreal IMK attorney Audrey Boctor who filed the initial class action lawsuit said “We are very pleased with the Quebec Court of Appeal judgment that recognizes that class actions are an appropriate vehicle for claims of widespread, surreptitious discrimination.“.
Audrey Boctor thinks the lawsuit if won, might result in damages to Meta estimated to be a $100 million.
