Google is delving deeper into the world of generative AI, unveiling a fresh feature in its Search function that crafts images from textual prompts. This innovative step aims to broaden user discovery beyond existing search outcomes.

Dubbed the Search Generative Experience (SGE), this feature empowers users to key in image creation prompts directly into the search bar, with results showcased in real-time.

This development responds to instances where users might require visual representation for an abstract idea or can’t locate a precise image representation in conventional search results.

However, with great power comes responsibility. Aware of the vast potential (and possible pitfalls) of AI, Google is introducing this technology with utmost caution. Built-in safeguards ensure that the image creation process adheres to Google’s stringent policies against misleading or harmful content in the context of generative AI.

Moreover, every AI-crafted image will carry both metadata labeling and an embedded watermark, signaling its AI origin. For now, this image generation feature is exclusively available in English within the US, restricted to participants aged 18 and above who have opted into the SGE experiment.

Google is also gearing up to launch a tool titled ‘About this image‘. This feature will guide users in understanding the context and credibility of visuals, possibly pinpointing when an image first surfaced online or showcasing other web pages utilizing a similar image, encompassing news or fact-checking platforms.

Google’s latest foray into generative AI is a testament to the evolving role of search engines in shaping digital experiences. By enabling users to manifest visuals from mere textual cues, Google is not just enhancing search functionality but reshaping the very essence of digital discovery. The proactive approach to ethical AI use, with features like watermarking and metadata labeling, further underscores the platform’s commitment to responsible innovation.
