Meta has announced significant progress in its mission to enable EU users to import chats from other messaging apps into Messenger and WhatsApp.
This update marks a crucial step towards achieving interoperability, as mandated by the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The company has built new notifications into WhatsApp and Messenger to inform users about third-party chats, making it clear and easy to find.
A simple onboarding flow allows users to learn more and enable the feature, with options to choose which third-party apps to receive messages from and how to manage their inbox.
Users will have the choice to keep third-party chats separate from their current inbox or combine all chats in a single inbox. Rich messaging features, such as reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts, will be available, with group creation and voice/video calling to follow in 2025 and 2027, respectively.
Meta emphasizes the technical challenges and shared responsibility of preserving privacy and security in achieving interoperability. The company will continue collaborating with third-party messaging services to ensure a safe and seamless experience.
Meta’s progress towards EU messaging interoperability is a positive step towards promoting competition and innovation in the digital landscape.
By providing users with more choices and control over their messaging experience, Meta demonstrates its commitment to meeting the requirements of the DMA and enhancing user experience.
