X is expanding its Community Notes feature, allowing users to request notes on posts they believe contain questionable claims. This new option aims to enhance content accuracy and provide clarity on the platform.
Users can now find a “Request Community Note” option within the post menu on desktop, which flags the post for review by Community Notes contributors. This feature allows users who are not contributors to participate in the moderation process, alerting contributors where notes may be beneficial.
To request a note, users need to tap the menu’s (3 dots) on a post and select “Request Community Note.” Accounts must have a verified phone number to be eligible, and users can make up to five requests per day. This limit may increase if the requests result in helpful notes or decrease if they are deemed unnecessary, preventing spam and ensuring focus on relevant posts.
During the pilot phase, Community Notes contributors are split, with 50% able to write and request notes and 50% able to write only. Contributors with Top Writer status will see request alerts if a post is less than 24 hours old and has five or more requests. These criteria are subject to change to maintain the value and reduce noise during the pilot.
X’s introduction of user-requested Community Notes is a commendable step towards enhancing content integrity. By involving the community in the moderation process, X fosters a collaborative approach to identifying and addressing questionable claims, improving the overall user experience.
