At the recent AWS re:Invent event, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a significant collaboration with LG AI Research (LG AI), the AI arm of South Korea’s LG Group. LG AI has launched its advanced AI image-to-text captioning solution on AWS, leveraging its EXAONE model, a robust 300-billion-parameter, multimodal foundation model (FM).
EXAONE’s cutting-edge, zero-shot image-captioning solution employs generative AI to interpret and describe unseen objects or scenes in a human-like manner. This groundbreaking technology allows EXAONE to generate precise image captions and keywords, demonstrating near-human cognition in both Korean and English. This development is particularly beneficial for industries like advertising, fashion, and retail, where automated product descriptions and innovative content creation are crucial.
The use of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) by LG AI for EXAONE underscores the scalability and security AWS offers. This cloud computing service enables LG AI to effectively scale IT resources in line with the expanding parameters of EXAONE’s training.
Hwayoung (Edward) Lee, Vice President, Lead of AI Business Development Unit at LG AI Research said “AI is revolutionizing many industries, and we are excited about this technology’s potential to cost effectively help people become more creative. LG AI’s EXAONE is a powerful tool that makes generative AI more accessible for creative fields, and AWS’s industry-leading machine learning capabilities have helped us to rapidly develop and deploy our innovative solutions. Our vision is to help creatives drive new levels of efficiency and enable companies to focus on creating rather than on tedious activities like image searches.”.
LG AI’s customers, including consumer-goods companies and marketing agencies, can now generate over 2,000 image captions per hour, thanks to the scalable infrastructure provided by AWS. EXAONE was trained using Amazon SageMaker on 350 million high-resolution image and text pairs, offering LG AI the flexibility to fine-tune results and swiftly address challenges like data bias.
Beyond captioning solutions, LG AI’s generative AI technology is making waves across the LG Group. For instance, LG Household & Health Care’s ‘IMPRINTU,’ an instant temporary tattoo printer, uses this technology to create unique designs for skin or clothing. LG AI also plans to provide its EXAONE model to affiliated LG companies to enhance software code generation and boost the productivity and creativity of engineers working on household appliances and home entertainment products.
Vasi Philomin, Vice President & General Manager, Generative AI at Amazon said “Generative AI is one of the most transformational technologies of our lifetime, significantly impacting productivity and creativity. As the content generation industry booms, LG AI Research is showing how technology like the EXAONE ideation platform can foster better collaboration between AI, designers, and artists with its rapid image-to-text captioning solution built on AWS. We look forward to supporting LG’s AI research institute in scaling its generative AI innovations to unleash new levels of creativity worldwide.”.
The LG AI EXAONE image-to-text solution is now accessible to millions of AWS’s global active customers through the AWS Marketplace and Amazon SageMaker Jumpstart. LG AI also intends to migrate EXAONE to Amazon Bedrock, offering customers a wider array of options to test, customize, and deploy the most suitable model for their specific needs.
LG AI’s integration of its EXAONE image-to-text solution with AWS showcases how AI technology can significantly enhance creative capabilities in various industries. This collaboration not only exemplifies innovation in AI but also illustrates the potential for AI to transform traditional business processes, offering new dimensions of efficiency and creativity.
