As a result of Canada’s proposed Online News Act, Meta is taking its threats to remove Canadian news publishers from its applications more seriously.
Meta Removes Canadian News From The Platform
Meta is currently conducting live testing to evaluate the performance of its applications in the absence of Canadian outlets, in anticipation of a potential ban by the Canadian government.
Meta said in their announcement “Randomised tests will help us build an effective product solution to end news availability in Canada as defined in Bill C-18. Throughout the testing period, which will run for several weeks, a small percentage of people in Canada who are enrolled in testing will be notified if they attempt to share news content.”.
Meta’s big move is to show Canadian lawmakers it’s serious about not displaying Canadian news articles if the new law is approved.
