In a groundbreaking move, Amazon has announced a $4 billion investment in AI safety and research firm Anthropic. This collaboration aims to develop top-tier foundation models, leveraging Anthropic’s frontier safety research with Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) established, secure infrastructure.
Anthropic will now use AWS as its principal cloud provider, benefiting from AWS’s advanced Trainium and Inferentia chips for model training and deployment. The partnership also extends to the development of future AWS technologies.
Dario Amodei, Co-Founder and CEO of Anthropic said “We are excited to use AWS’s Trainium chips to develop future foundation models. Since announcing our support of Amazon Bedrock in April, Claude has seen significant organic adoption from AWS customers. By significantly expanding our partnership, we can unlock new possibilities for organizations of all sizes, as they deploy Anthropic’s safe, state-of-the-art AI systems together with AWS’s leading cloud technology.”.
The deal will amplify support for Amazon Bedrock, allowing businesses to optimize the performance of the AI model Claude, while Amazon developers can incorporate Anthropic’s state-of-the-art models into their applications.
Claude 2, Anthropic’s leading model, is already seeing real-world applications. LexisNexis Legal & Professional uses it for conversational search and legal drafting, Bridgewater Associates for investment analysis, and Lonely Planet has reduced costs by almost 80% using the model for itinerary generation.
Both companies emphasize the safe deployment of advanced AI models and have previously supported AI safety initiatives led by the White House. As part of this agreement, Amazon will acquire a minority stake in Anthropic. However, Anthropic’s corporate governance will remain unchanged. The partnership is set to propel advancements in AI safety and research on a global scale.
