Qatar carefully regulates the sale of alcohol, so it had to loosen its laws to let FIFA sponsor Budweiser to sell its goods outside World Cup tournament sites and fan zones. Fans have now been informed that they cannot purchase beer at any games throughout the event.
Beer Ban in Qatar’s World Cup
Alcohol sales inside stadiums during the World Cup are prohibited in Qatar. Less than 48 hours remain till the start of the competition when the decision is made. The exclusive license to sell beer during games at stadiums belonged to Budweiser. “Well, this is awkward,” a beer brand owned by AB InBev tweeted.
Alcohol drinking is strictly prohibited in Qatar and is only authorized in designated areas. However, it consented to loosen such regulations for the competition when it was given the World Cup in 2010. According to GlobalData’s Wiacek, the company probably won’t immediately end its partnership with FIFA.
