As much a cultural as a technological change, Discord is now asking all users to adopt a new platform-wide handle. You’ll need to wait for an in-app prompt to change your username, and long-time users will be given preference.
Discord has safeguards in place to protect the identities of its most prominent users from impersonation, but this won’t apply to everyone. People are more likely to try to find plausible user identities after seeing an absolute name, which can lead to swatting or other forms of harassment.
Discord has caved to the pressures of social media by enabling users to have the same name without having to worry about picking the “perfect” nickname. Discord is demanding a radical identity shift from its millions of established members.
