Because of their large number of users, social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Google are subject to stronger regulations in the EU because of their popularity.
VLOPs and DSA
Social media and tech companies with more than 45 million users are considered “very large online platforms” (VLOPs) under the new regulations known as the Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandate risk mitigation and independent auditing.
Companies will also be required to share data with regulators to make sure companies are adhering to the laws in maintaining users data.
The European Commission required social media and tech companies to reveal their monthly active users by following the regulations or face penalties.
In 2023, below are the European Union’s MAUs for the most popular social media and tech companies:
YouTube: 401.7 million, Google Search: 332 million, Facebook: 255 million, Instagram: 250 million, TikTok: 125 million, LinkedIn: 122 million, Bing: 107 million and Twitter: 100.9 million.
