U.S. senators made it clear during the first congressional appearance of TikTok’s CEO that other Big Tech corporations are still very much in the hot seat.
The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee asked TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew about data protection, advertising, content moderation, mental health, and ByteDance and the Chinese government. He promoted TikTok’s “Project Texas” data storage and third-party monitoring reform.
Republicans and Democrats criticized Chew for avoiding questioning regarding TikTok’s data gathering, the parent firm, and China relations. TikTok’s advertising is similar to other social sites, but its owner is distinct.
