TikTok continues to face difficulties as the platform was penalized £12,700,000 in the UK for allowing access to the app by minors under 13.
TikTok Minors Users
This is the first significant penalty levied under new British regulations aimed at keeping the internet safe for children. Last year, British authorities informed TikTok of the investigation and asked the app to make changes to its operations to meet the new rules.
The ICO said in their statement “ICO has issued a £12,700,000 fine to TikTok Information Technologies UK Limited and TikTok Inc (TikTok) for a number of breaches of data protection law, including failing to use children’s personal data lawfully. The ICO estimates that TikTok allowed up to 1.4 million UK children under 13 to use its platform in 2020, despite its own rules not allowing children that age to create an account.”.
Social media platforms are under the microscope when allowing minors on their platforms. Just recently, Snapchat blocked users under 13 from using the app.
